“Why is Deepsilk more expensive than other silk?” This is a question sometimes asked by our customers. The answer lies in three key factors that set Deepsilk™ apart from standard silk products.
1: Uncompromising Silk Quality
At OPSUNDBAY, we prioritise quality above all else, especially given our background in dealing with sensitive skin. After thoroughly evaluating the silk market, we selected the finest supplier available. Deepsilk is crafted from the highest grade 6A Mulberry silk, woven in a 25-momme charmeuse weave. This weight of silk strikes the perfect balance—while higher momme counts exist, we believe they become excessively thick for optimal comfort in pillowcases and sleeping masks. Our decision to use this specific grade and weight ensures that the silk remains soft, breathable, and ideal for skin and hair.
2: Free from Silicone
Unlike many other silk products, Deepsilk is produced without added silicone, which actually increases production costs. Although it may seem counterintuitive that the absence of an ingredient leads to higher costs, producing silk without silicone requires significant adjustments to the standard production process. More than the usual setup must be altered to meet our specific requirements for Deepsilk™, resulting in additional time and effort. This meticulous process ensures that the silk retains its natural, breathable quality, avoiding the synthetic finish often associated with lower-quality silk treatments.
3: Enriched with Natural Silk Proteins
One of the defining features of Deepsilk is its enrichment with natural sericin silk protein, which has to be removed during the production process - known as silk degumming. In this process, the silk is divided into two components: fibroin, the core silk thread, and sericin, the protein that binds the silk cocoon together. Sericin, recognised for its hydrating properties, is widely used in skincare for its ability to retain moisture.
Working alongside silk specialists and scientists, we’ve developed a unique method to reintroduce this beneficial protein into the silk fabric. By using micelles to carry and deliver sericin, the protein is released upon contact with the heat of the skin, providing enhanced hydration and nourishment for both skin and hair throughout the night. Lab tests show this sericin enrichment remains effective for up to 20 washes. Even after this period, the pillowcase retains its exceptional softness and quality. This innovative process maximises the natural benefits of silk, offering extended skin and hair care while you sleep.
