Care & Washing of Silk

Care & Washing of OPSUNDBAY Silk

If you follow these ten tips, you will have clean silk to enjoy every time you sleep.

Care & Washing of silk

  1. We recommend that you wash silk separately - preferably hand wash. Use lukewarm water prepared with mild soap especially for silk. Rinse afterwards with lukewarm water. Silk masks must only be washed by hand.

  2. Silk should be washed for no more than 20 - 30 minutes, using the silk or gentle cycle, max 30 degrees. Silk should only be washed with silk detergent that doesn’t contain optical white, enzymes or perfume. Silk dries very quickly and shouldn’t be tumble dried. Remove the silk from the washing machine immediately after washing, stretch it out and hang it to dry.

  3. If you want to iron the silk bedding, it should be done while the silk is damp and not completely dry. The temperature must be low (silk programme).

  4. The silk is very shiny and smooth when first used. After it has been washed a few times, the silk begins to look and feel more matte and soft, which is completely natural and for some, is even more comfortable to sleep in.

  5. Silk thread is naturally both very strong and incredibly soft. If you take good care of it, it will be a dream to sleep in for many years. Treat it as you would your own skin. Like skin, it will be damaged if you scrub it too hard or wash it with harsh products.

  6. Silk creates less dust than cotton and linen, so you will experience less dust in your bedroom too. Dust mites and other pests do not thrive in silk, so it is only necessary to air the duvets occasionally.

  7. Stains – All stains must be gently removed before the silk is washed in the washing machine. If there is an accident or stain, wash the area immediately in lukewarm water so the stain is completely dissolved. You can use stain removers for tough stains from, e.g. blood, red wine etc. It is important to carefully remove the stain and rinse with clean water immediately so that chemicals are washed out of the silk - before washing it in the washing machine (See point 1).

  8. Dry Cleaning – There are very few dry cleaners who understand silk. Always ask specifically how they remove difficult stains. If they answer acetone, stay far away. Acetone discolours the silk, and stains can never go away!

  9. Bedspread and decorative pillows – If you want to keep the beautiful sheen of your new silk, take good care of it. You don't need to wash it if you don't sleep on it. It just needs to be aired once in a while. Be careful with creams and oils, as this can cause stains.

  10. Silk duvets and silk pillows – Wash on a short silk programme, max 30 degrees. Use only silk detergent. Then reshape the silk and leave it to dry.
